Default Intercooler Coolant Tank

I would like to get some ideas from forum members.

When separating the Engine/Intercooler surge tank - what would work better for the intercooler circulating tank? (the engine coolant would have it's own surge/header tank):

1) A tank where you add liquid ice (let's say distilled) and drain the excess out as the ice melts and thus the tank fills up with more coolant?

2) A tank where you can drop in big chunks of dry ice directly into the coolant and have a pressure vent valve to allow the expanding gases to escape?

3) A tank with a isolated chamber to drop dry or liquid ice into (requiring draining in the case of liquid ice)?

Thanks in advance for your input - I still have a bit of design time before fab.

I am no expert in the matter but the most logical way and safest way would be to have a separate chamber with lets say aluminum walls that woulld conduct heat and help colling with the addition of dry ice or liquid ice. Adding liquid ice into the mixture of coolant or dry ice into the mixture of coolant and water doesn't sound all that great to me
Are you goin to make these available to the public or just a personal project?
nice ride!

I've already have seperated the intercooler and engine coolant with two tanks in two different mounting locations. I'm now developing a Intercooler tank and looking for advice and opinions on cooling/icing experience.

I am leaning towards a design where you cann add the ice directly to the water and just have a check valve to allow the expanding gas in the case of dry ice.

This is just a personal project.

Since the tank is just a puke tank for the overflow (expansion of fluid), to get any gain you would want to route the flow from the NEW tank to the heat exchanger in the inlet then to the H/E, pump and back. Cooling the overflow tank would do nothing otherwise. Enjoy

Correct - as the expansion tank is configured now -

But I'm not building an new "expansion" tank for the intercooler - I am fabbing up a new "circulation-feed" tank for the IC system.

I already purchased a new/separate "Puke" tank for the for the engine coolant.

Here is a setup I made for my old car a few years back, I used ice/water in the tank when at the dragstrip, ran a mix of antifreeze and water the rest of the time. I mounted it in the stock battery location and the car was powered by a small Oddessy PCMJT680t battery(hidden under engine cover next to ice box. I also added a fan to the heat exchanger that ran any time the ignition was on. This resulted in drastically reduced IAT's.

That is one clean setup.

Thanks, it ran really well (still does for the new owner) and is actually a little faster than my srt6 is now.

Wait to you slap that pulley (crank or SC) on the SRT then you will feel real power. I know I can't wait till my pulley finally comes in .

HDDP had a tank built that allowed him to put small 'freeze tanks' in that contained dry ice or were simply frozen water. These could be swapped between sessions.

Not sure if he ever got it done or not... but here's the drawing I did for him.

His fabricator said it would be better to make the tank out of a single piece of aluminum and bend the walls, where I have several plates being put together.

Hope that helps... Cheers!

Thanks MMZ,

I don't have room for a tank that size but was considering a similar type design with a seperate ice cavity that would not add to the coolant level as the ice melted. But I decided to go with a Canton type tank similar to MRPhotoman using the OEM mounting location so I could maiximize coolant capacity while when not icing. The tank will have a small check-valve to allow the expanding CO2 gasses to escape as the dry ice melts. You can still add (distilled) ice but would need to drain some of the coolant when the ice melts to avoid overflow.

Well, these ideas are good ones... I'd like to see someone try it. I would, but time just doesn't allow right now.

The easiest solution would be if Code3 Performance would get off their collective A$$ and start producing the one they have been showing on their website since Moses wore short pants. I hate it when a company throws something out there as "Coming Soon" then either takes forever to come through with it or never produces it at all. I've sent them emails stating my desire to buy one, but have gotten no positive or affirmative results for a timeframe.

I'll call out all Crossfire tuners to take on this challenge and make one. PLEASE!!!

I'm on it. Did you get the one that relocated the battery or the one that is set up for the mini Race battery?

Can I pay you to come to my shop and make me one like that, that s... is awesome! For real, pm me, I'm just over in Maryland!

Neither -

I am having a local hot-rod shop fab up a design I mocked up - out .100 aluminum. It will replace the OEM tank in the same location but with more capacity, larger fill opening and the abilty to "flow" coolant thru the tank.

Actually I do sell kits for other cars, I will make one for the srt6 soon as I have some free time. I am one of the sponsors for an event at the local race track the last weekend of May (Beat the Heat-race the police) so I am really busy this month. Once that is over I will get to work on it. I also designed and sell a dual pass and triple pass heat exchangers for other cars. I will work on one for this car as well, I am busy in the summer though. The car stuff is for fun, my real job and my photography on the side keep me swamped lol.

What part of MD are you in? I am up at Cumberland once in a while.

I'm in Dunkirk, about 30 minutes south of Wash. DC. I here you on the busy side, You should make something for the car though, that would sale well I would think. Since heat is our enemy with these cars! These intercooler pumps and heat exchangers are good,,,but in the summer their only so good?!. And that's when these cars are out and having fun!
