You can pop the switches right off when you get the panel pulled out. It's a little work but not to bad in the grand scheme of things. One thing to look into before painting them though it the back lighting on the buttons. You will lose this if you paint them and then you will need to somehow label your buttons so you know what you are trying to do unless you have a great memory which I would confess that I wouldn't when it came to this. I agree with you about the silver buttons on a black panel. You might be surprised though when it's all done how good it will look in the factory silver.
