My favorite tactic is to find a "rabbit", someone whipping down the left lane. I then get behind him (or her, I suppose) and leave about 1/4 mile distance. If they get pinged, I get an alert in time to slow down. They also help more on roads you are somewhat familiar with.
that's typically what i do when traveling the Ohio Turnpike. let the guy who wants to be in front flush 'em out.
