Maybe I came off a little harsh looking back, but come on, the tallest nail gets hammered down. I'm pretty sure this didn't happen without previous bragging or flashing off of the fact that his car is better than everyone elses.
Just from what I know of the kid, he's confident, not smug. We went to the same school. While I was there I had a McDonalds Cheeseburger smeared across my windshield. I thought every one like me too and I'm much more cocky than Smokey is.
