The reason for the 3 seconds deal is because you need to be positivly sure you want to start the car. Time how long it takes right now for you to insert the key into the car, turn the key on and turn the car over. It's almost 3 seconds so I figured this is pretty appropriate.
It's still open to discussion but I don't want this the end up being a problem for someone that erroneously starts their car because they bump the button.
