I was typing this as you added your post, good for you.

My Craftsman socket set is from the early 1970's and the only thing that has happened to them is the chrome has started to peel off a couple of the sockets, the ratchets are still good, so I cannot complain, they are excellent.

I would be surprised if the new ones from Sears were not made in China, but they still have the warranty. Everything you buy that was US or Canadian made says China now, so why would I be surprised. One of my pet peeves, don't mind me.

My advice would be to buy a nice set of wrenches and a nice set of sockets on sale (inch and metric) and add the specialty tools as needed, Torx etc. Not many bolts on a car go over 7/8" (22mm) so buy the bigger ones as required.

Whatever you buy, look after them and they will last a lifetime.
