Thanks guys, I'll go for the craftsmen. Sears will have some of them at half price this friday. Hopefully I'll get it before they are gone.

You can't beat Craftsman tools for warranty, if they break replaced with no questions asked.

If you join the Craftsman Club (it's free) they'll send you presale notices and even members only discounts.

we use craftsman also with some snap on mixed in. for the crossfire it was recommended by benz shops for us to use the lisle torx's as the socket lenght/base width was much more forgiving on mercedes.

here si the sets that will cover you on the crossfire...
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...ighlight=lisle

a decent craftsman kit and those torx's can get you to looking at pistons on the car

buy tools for the long run, so long they dont get borrowed and not returned you will be glad you got the good stuff.

This my own personal preference, and some may think it a bit cliche.

But I would recommend ratechting wrenches. There are some things that are so hard to reach that a socket is useless and a wrench takes forever.

ratcheting wrenches are the best.... however, very expensive for a full set.

CRAFTSMAN is the only way to go for any hand tool. walk into the store with your broken one, pick a new one off the shelf. go home, continue what you were doing.... nothing beats it

I'd agree with the ratcheting wrenches. The lady bought me a set for Xmass a while back when they were new. The guys at the hangar had a good laugh. "WIMP!" Every time I went to lunch, there would be one or two missing, and I could pinpoint the perpetrator by listening to the unique sound as they were sneaking a test twist. Now that I have a few sets of them, my Snap-On's are on display only, it seems. Get the angled ones. Otherwise you will be getting callouses on the tops of your fingers from abrasions.

Thanks for all your advice. Bought the craftsman 260 pcs combo, comes with a nice plastic container with plenty of extra storage. $100 off original $270 at Sears

I was typing this as you added your post, good for you.

My Craftsman socket set is from the early 1970's and the only thing that has happened to them is the chrome has started to peel off a couple of the sockets, the ratchets are still good, so I cannot complain, they are excellent.

I would be surprised if the new ones from Sears were not made in China, but they still have the warranty. Everything you buy that was US or Canadian made says China now, so why would I be surprised. One of my pet peeves, don't mind me.

My advice would be to buy a nice set of wrenches and a nice set of sockets on sale (inch and metric) and add the specialty tools as needed, Torx etc. Not many bolts on a car go over 7/8" (22mm) so buy the bigger ones as required.

Whatever you buy, look after them and they will last a lifetime.

Now I'm jealous. I've had most of my Craftsman tools since the late '70's and they just don't break. Plus I rarely lone out my tools so I still have nearly every one of them. Just not as complete set as that. Nice job.
