General practice calls for enforcement to leave radar unit off until speed has been estimated. And I believe there is a requirement that estimated speed needs to be within a certain percent of radar-reported speed.
The rest of what he said is true too.
I look at my radar detector as another element in my approach to driving that prevents me from traveling too fast. I think that paying attention and driving the speed limit saves me more often than the detector.
When the detector saves me is those times when I am thinking about passing or making a move that would put me over the limit, but has warned me of the possibility of enforcement in the area.
But it can also save you if enforcement takes his radar out of standby with another target in mind, and you happen to be moving along too. It might give you just enough time to correct before you become the target...
