Most radar detectors have to have a clear view of the pavement to work properly(according to the owners manuals ) so this would probably decrease the effectiveness of it. I personally have noticed a difference in how well my passport 8500 works when it is right on my dash compared to 3 or so inches above the dash. When its 3 or so inches off the dash with a better view of the pavement it seems to pick up signals from further away
