Definitely get the code from the check engine light. since it is happening when you nail the throttle is sounds like a cloggged fuel filter. I would also check the air filters. If you get the air fuel ratio way off the car will go into fail safe to protect itself. Even if the check engine light go back off the code is still stored. auto zone will scan if for free if you don't have a scanner.
