Re: Need New Tires
Buying new tires is simple. Isn't it? You will get a lot of help from the good folks on the Forum, so hang on. Most have a favorite, but just a few thoughts from me:
Up front - just watch the clearances to other stuff. You can probably go as fat and tall as 245/40R18 without any problems.
Aspect ratios - if you want to drop the rear to 30, also drop the front to 35. No problem. It'll keep the low-profile 'look' consistent from front to back and maintain headlight aim. Purely a cosmetic choice; your call.
Do you want a Summer tire, or an All Season tire?
Drive style - are you after performance or comfort? Probably decision number one! Use the TireRack ratings matrix and just change the filters. Very helpful tool. You'll find three categories of performance tires - 'ultra', 'max' and 'extreme' - sounds like you're an 'ultra' guy. You probably want quiet comfort over cornering stability. Is wet/dry traction important? I doubt it. Understand what type of a tire you are looking for, first! Don't pay for performance you don't need.
Cost - depends upon your wallet, answers to questions above and day-to-day store specials. Sometimes 'appearance' is most important. Tread wear ratings are helpful, but not gospel. Hard rubber gives longer wear I suppose, but softer rubber is smooth/quiet and gives better performance. You get what you pay for. So pay for what you want. With the the width and aspect ratio that you want in the back of your mind, comfort or performance in mind, use the TireRack ratings matrix and the specs/size/price pages to help generally select a tire manufacturer you feel you can afford. Narrow in on the the specific tire, manufacturer and size(s), and then shop around for that tire. Availability and store 'specials' will depend upon the specific size(s). It may take a few passes, but you'll find the best deal and still get the ride and size that you want.
Confused enough? You'll find the gang helpful; just take your time and do your homework.
Good luck.
