When the i/c is failing/fails, the car does surge when it causes the supercharger to disconnect. However an attempt to accelerate hard at that point will result in no power, no acceleration. If the i/c problem is intermittent there will be a noticeable slow down when the s/c cuts back in. This is actually the drag caused by the s/c clutch re-engaging.
