A friend of mine lost his only daughter and his only grandchild in an incident when they were t'boned by a drunk driver who failed to stop at a stop sign. This was a few years after he had buried his only son who had died in a motorcycle crash. Tragic is the only word to use.
I do not use the word accident as there is always at least one person who causes these incidents. The police here do not use the word accident these days and I agree with them.
