I think that the second reason is more likely to cause a negative reaction ... when someone gets something that they didn't earn, people are often jealous and/or upset. They likely assumed that you were a spoiled snob who had a rich daddy.

The worst thing about that kind of attitude is that we all would like to help our kids (either current or future) be better off than what we were, so unless you actually were acting snobby / "better than thou," there shouldn't be a negative reaction.
