We lived in Michigan for many years and did the same thing. Had to teach my daughter to do the same.

Live outside of Washington D.C. now. At the first sign of snow these guys shut down the schools and run to the grocery store the night before. I always get a laugh out of this panic over 1-2 inches.

The first winter I worked here they had about 3 inch "snow storm". I drove into work to find that I was the only one in my dept. that made it. After this they nicknamed me the mad man from Michigan.
