Two filters filtering different air do not provide for any more filteration on a ppm (parts per million) basis. Dual intake pipes don't always have a better flow rate, if the measurements and/or dimensions are wrong or if there is too much fritcion on the I/D of the intake you will create a venturi effect in the y-pipe leading to the throttle body reducing the overall CFM of air introduced into the engine.
...to add a comment to your statement on the cost of parts. This is not a US built engine, or car for that matter. You are trying to modify a German engine (and frankly an expensive engine). If you look at the cost to modify other lines of Mercedes made engines you are talking multiple thousands of dollars for an intake or tune. Welcome to the world of Mercedes. Price is all relative, do your research, make your own decisions, have fun, and show a little respect to those who have come before you.
