Actually not entirely true.
If you are willing to pony up the cash and get an automatic rifle sold in the US before September 1994 (i think that's the date), They have been grandfathered in. Basically you're paying a little for the rifle itself and a LOT for the documentation that it is a grandfathered weapon.
