I polished a bit more and they improved. Enough for me unless they can come of easily. They appear to cost $160 on Fleabay, too much to risk ruining them.
I have investigated to see if it is possible to pull the covers of this unit, the answer is yes. But it looks a bit too much work for me just to polish it a bit more.
I found an article in BenzWorld on rebuilding a similar unit. They call their unit a Duo Valve, that seems a suitable name for it.
The valve appears about halfway through the article, it's a good read.
