There's a **** on the side of the snare drum to adjust the tension on the snares. They need to be fairly tight. Lower the snares, adjust the tension and then raise them back. Be careful not to force it too tight.
I'd seen the adjustment arm, but forgot about it. They were loosy-goosy... NOW it sounds right!
