Since you live in Kansas, and you are planning on heading up to 12k feet, then that means you're most likely coming over here to Colorado.

Honestly, don't worry about getting hit by lightning.
It happens, but its a rarity.

Worry more about getting hit by another stupid driver.
Especially if the weather is clear, traffic is light, and the road is straight.
That happens all the time.
