Anyone with experience please feel free to correct me, but my understanding is that it simply takes out that (agonizing) lag between the pedal being depressed and the response to the input.

While not changing the speed of the shift up while accelerating, it will shift down quicker as a result of the quicker throttle response as when wanting to pass.
