But if you look at what Beaner designed, he found a nice way to make a false floor, protect the subs and have a relatively flat surface.

That is pretty darn ingenuitive, though I'd be a little hesitant of putting much weight on top of the box out of fear of crack or scratching the plastic speaker covers. Looks like it would free up more room than you probably have with your current setup, though.
