Dave, you raise a very important point with the comment about distance. The last remote start I had worked about 200-300 feet away, but it had a small antenna that mounted by the rear view mirror to increase the distance. Maybe something like this could work?
The problem isn't so much the antenna on the car side..it's the limited output of the remote.
