If Mercedes glues liners to their hoods (see pictures at link) on some other models, seems it would be OK for us to do the same. My OEM liner has shrunk, and I like to do a job just once, so why go back with another that will shrink in a couple years? Some of these guys left the hood on the car, then rolled on DAP contact cement vice a spray on adhesive.
I also believe the liner insulates the hood/engine; keeping the engine compartment cooler in the summer for those of us in the deep south, and keeps it warmer in the winter. Without a liner come a thundershower, and you may have steam coming off your hood. It helps insulate noise as well.
