Bought my car from a Florida dealer almost a year ago and the only way for me to avoid the tax was to have the car shipped to me. If I drove the car off the lot the dealer was obligated to charge the tax and remit it. However, if you buy the car from a private seller, you can avoid the tax by having the seller leave their plates on it....drive it back then mail them their plates once you get back.
Many states have different tax laws so be diligent and do your homework.
