Hate to see ya replace a perfectly good water pump only to find out it is a bearing or something else!
I hate to suggest the hose trick, one slip and it could be in your ear.
I would suggest taking the belt off and rotating all the pulleys by hand and look for a rough and lumpy feel.
The bearing is protected by a seal and if the seal goes there should a leak out the front of the pump as well as a noise.
