I was quoted $1500-1600 by a small independent MB/BMW shop with a good reputation last year (I was looking at an XF with a bad clutch, the car was being offered at a bargain-basement price - I passed on it.)

Point is: I don't think you are being ripped off, the only cheaper way is to live near someone who can do this work that won't charge you the going labor rate and parts mark up.
