It has been done many times here. You can use the factory switch to make them work. I would stick with OEM if you can get them affordable. It is not a hard job, there are several ways to hook them up to work with the factory switch. Someone here can chime in that actually accomplished the job.
Personally, I would use a relay and have them come on anytime the running/parking lights are on. That way no need to run a wire into the cab.

Excellent suggestion to use fogs as day-time-running-lights (DRL's). There are a number of DRL relay kits on the market, and YES you would save a lot of time and effort by
not taking wiring into the cabin.
As a kicker, fogs lights look
great as running lights, and all of the lil' 'ol ladies will see you coming.
