I agree, the thought of not having a spare ever creep in my mind when I hope on my bike. But with bike tire being so curved and only a small contact-patch on the ground, most thing either deflects away, or you need very bad luck to take one in the middle of the tire (knock on wood).
Along with the tire-kit, maybe having AAA would give you a better peace of mind.
