A bigger one works perfectly as long as it bigger in the correct manner.
The standard O-ring size is a Parker size #2-014 which is nominally sized 1/16" x 1/2" ID x 5/8"OD.

Stretching a Parker size #2-110 with the nominal sizes of 3/32" x 3/8"ID x 9/16"OD works perfectly. The stretching reduces the cross section and increases the ID and OD's. The OD when installed is about .660"

You cannot use a bigger 1/16" section O-ring, and a bigger 3/32" section O-ring #2-112) with a 1/2"ID would have a 11/16"OD (.687") which is too much.

The correct size O-ring comes with the oil filter, I'm not sure if it's one of those used but you could always use the old one anyway.
