I was reading in the manual that you cant remove the upper oil sump/pan to inspect journals etc unless you remove the engine.

Has anyone done the removal whilst the car is hoisted or similar?
I was hoping to "desludgify" my oil pan/sump - but am thinking - I really would like to get to all "static surfaces" including the upper oil pan - if it can be done.
