Default Removal of Upper Oil Pan...

I was reading in the manual that you cant remove the upper oil sump/pan to inspect journals etc unless you remove the engine.

Has anyone done the removal whilst the car is hoisted or similar?
I was hoping to "desludgify" my oil pan/sump - but am thinking - I really would like to get to all "static surfaces" including the upper oil pan - if it can be done.

attached a couple of pictures.....
I would like to avoid removing the tranny and motor to look at journals and possibly remove at least one piston for inspection - anyone know a way?

PS - I'd also like to remove the timing cover without taking the engine out.Advice appreciated - even if it is - Dont do it!.....

Engines's full of sludge - so I want to do as much of an inspection and cleanup as possible - preferably without taking the motor out.
80k miles, but sludge was so bas even the oil filler cap was blocked

Thinking
  • Heads off
  • Lumpy cam?....not sure.
  • Timing cover off, new chain and 4 new guides whilst I'm in there - couple of hundred bucks
  • Pull a piston and inspect - hopefully okay
  • Clean upper oil pan and check oil sprays, visual check of other journals
  • Clean all possible galleries.
  • If I can get away with doing withough pulling the motor - all the better.

OH, you aren't kidding...someone never, I mean NEVER changed the oil.... well, in that case, I think you need to pull the motor, or flush the engine several times with cleaner, don't run it, but turn it over by hand with the pan off...which is a mess to do, but....if it were me, it's tear down time... I hope you bought this at a great price.... You will have to mic the cam, the journals, everything....too bad, man..

the motors are handbuilt and micro torqued with precision machinery. when you open it up you change all the dynamics of the engine. leave well enough alone run some seafoam thru the engine change the mobil 1 every 2 or 3 k for a while and run the crap out of it. your going to end up with more issues than you want

i know you had massive sludge but tearing it apart wont fix it. flush it and run it

+1
Buy cheaper oil and filters and run Seafoam through it a bunch of times.
