Re: Heat seeping through the firewall
A few things to check.
1. The condition of the rear catalytic converters. As mine began to fail (burn up and turn to dust) the heat increased even to the point where the shifter rod was hot too. Replaced cats...much much cooler!!
2. Check to make sure the air flap behind the fan blower motor is closing all the way. If you have not checked the cabin air filter...do it!! if that is all clogged up and the door stays open you get some air that is mixed with under hood air to some degree.
3. if that door is not closing when you hit the recirc button remove the battery and look for a hard gray vaccum line and check to see if it has been eaten away or cracked. The battery in this car is vented and it tends to drip on the harness that hard line is taped into. This runs to just below the throttle body and controls the door flap. If it is in good shape make sure it is still connected at the back of the throttle body...mine was off when I found the broken line.
