I have the same problem, good to know I'm not alone. And... can't get your link to work.

A few things to check.

1. The condition of the rear catalytic converters. As mine began to fail (burn up and turn to dust) the heat increased even to the point where the shifter rod was hot too. Replaced cats...much much cooler!!

2. Check to make sure the air flap behind the fan blower motor is closing all the way. If you have not checked the cabin air filter...do it!! if that is all clogged up and the door stays open you get some air that is mixed with under hood air to some degree.

3. if that door is not closing when you hit the recirc button remove the battery and look for a hard gray vaccum line and check to see if it has been eaten away or cracked. The battery in this car is vented and it tends to drip on the harness that hard line is taped into. This runs to just below the throttle body and controls the door flap. If it is in good shape make sure it is still connected at the back of the throttle body...mine was off when I found the broken line.

It does get awfully hot down there. Excellent advice from Infinity. Another more expensive(and cooler)fix is getting a set of Needswings catless downpipes. Definitely on my to do list.

Is that flap vacuum line immediately under the battery, running from the corner of the engine compartment diagonally towards the engine? If so, now I know what my dripping battery [acid] ate in my SRT6. How can I check to see if the flap is open or closed, or do I really care?

Yes it is wrapped up in a harness that runs from the flap controlled under the glove box, through the firewall, then across the firewall in the engine bay heading what looks like back the transmission. Then it exits the harness and runs to the lower portion unde rthe throttle body.

If you want to see the flap you can do so by removing the fan motor or pulling the shroud from under the windshield wipers and it will be in plain sight.

You do care if you want cold AC on hot days
