I can't say I've ever heard of this - I HAVE heard of balancing on the machine and balancing the wheel/tire ON THE CAR (which I have not seen anyone do since Mickulic's garage in Jonesville, MI closed in 1995.)

Don always balanced on the car - which makes sense on a car you can't rotate the tires on - but I didn't see the point on a truck I was rotating tires on every 12,000 miles.
