Hmmm, was I complaining? Sorry if it came off that way. I guess cops in general like to think we're underpaid (we are). In Alabama, LEO's can start at just above minimum wage. I work at one of the better departments and our starting officers make around 38K and top out around $54K. Not bad for someone with a GED...
I love my job and certainly didn't get in it for the money. I've got three daughters and can't imagine them being a cop. I hope they are smarter than me.
Ever once in a while, when approaching a car on a traffic stop, I do a gut check. It's easy to get complacent. But that little old blue haired lady behind the wheel may have a Glock in her lap and she may be in a bad mood. Bottom line, if someone wants to kill a cop, and you are that cop, you are gonna die. You can prepare all you want, but there's no defense for an ambush (the cops killed while eating lunch in your neck of the woods comes to mind).
