I hear what you are saying, and I agree that it can be a good tool to judge future mods before you have something permanently painted. It has been a few years since I have used the product (I have used it for years to coat tool handles, one of its original purposes) and maybe they have gotten it to lay better since I have used it. Most of the cars I see with it, in any sort of sunlight you can clearly tell it is not paint, and it was not applied correctly because of 'air bubble' that have popped, but you can still see the indent of them.
Maybe I will give it a shot one of these days, because it if layed well and was pretty tough, it could be perfect for certain items for sure....
I have seen some cars that looked like crap with it, but I think part of it was what they painted. The pepople who paint body panels shouldnt. I think a big surface like that needs to be actually painted. Small surfaces can turn out good but I have a painting background. Nothing fancy but I have painted alot of different things and experimented on stuff so I know a little more than the average on applying it. Im not sure if that matters, but it could have even been prep. I washed the crap out of all the surfaces first, Im not sure if others are doing it. But give it a shot, It has good uses.
