I am talking about the battery, there should be a plug in one vent hole in the battery and in the other vent hole there should be a small hose leading to the exterior to vent explosive gases and any acid over flow.

Under the hood there is air movement but in a confined spot the explosive and corrosive gases plus leakage can do a lot of damage in a short time

That's a good idea, batteries in the trunk last a year or so longer due to the cooler temperature.

I was in Beaners car with all the trunk trim out and those flaps wave about like crazy at quite low speeds and sounded like the trunk was full of leaves rustling around.
