The outside temp sensor is somewhere near the front fascia, not sure exactly where. It should be isolated from engine heat so the reading is always reasonably close to the ambient outside temp. If your sensor is getting hot there's a reason and you want to know.

Also please note mine started the same symptom right before the crankshaft position sensor went bad. Please investigate.
