But isn't the pump the most expensive part? That's why I want to try and mitigate any unnecessary spending.
Can I test the pump or any or the other possible causes and if so how?

You could try running a live diagnostic while driving, and keep a log of the charge temperature. You should feel the power cutout once it hits a certain threshold.
I had exactly the same problem and was planning to do that logging but ended up just replacing the pump. Fixed the issue completely.
