If it is 171 and 174 codes I would suspect filter or pump failure. My guess would be pump failure with too little pressure and fuel at the injectors.

Get the fuel pressure tested.

Run too lean for too long and you could have bigger problems to solve. Engines are hard to start cold with a lean mixture.

The battery seems fine for now, the trouble with old batteries is that they can quit on you at the worst possible moment. I changed both my Vartas when they were working fine, but I did not want to be caught if one went dead suddenly on me. Stuck miles from anywhere you would pay dearly to have a new battery to put under the hood.
