289 did not come first. The 260 with 260 horses (one of the earliest hp per ci cars) came first with an Edelbrock F4b manifold, try-y cast headers, I believe a minor cam, and a 4bbl.
They came before the 427 model, and that's what I meant.

I never use to be a "Ford Guy" and that's probably the biggest reason there isn't an "original" aluminium bodied Cobra sitting in my garage right now.
Automotive "bigotry" has cost me 100's of Thousands of dollars over the years. Instead of having an AMX that's only worth about 25k, there could have been a 67 or 68 Shelby Mustang, or a real aluminium 289 Cobra in my collection.
A 427/435hp 1967 Vette could have been there too, or even a Hemi Cuda Vert. But no, I had to be different and buy a brand new Rambler instead. When I could have picked up any of those other cars 2nd. hand back then for the same price I paid for my "New" AMX.

Not complaining, I'm just saying.
