I also remember some one here talking about a white battery from merc is bad or something?
That can be cleaned with paste baking soda mixed with water.
There is probably a leak of gases around the post, a new battery may be a good idea as that looks like the original.
If you buy a new battery keep the white container in the end of it, that stops spillage of acid onto your car and can save you headaches in the future. Also make sure there is a plug in the matching hole at the opposite end.
