To each their own I guess. Huge caps that cover the lugs scream - I'm a cheap and poorly designed American wheel/car (as in the pic) since it's where 99% of them are found. The design is way outdated and aside from the above are only typically used on generic aftermarket wheels with multiple bolt patterns since having empty holes is not that attractive either.
I think US auto makers (GM?) like the look of a "finished" center. I agree with you. It's just that with the machined recess for the large cap, removing it and adding the small one just looks...unfinished? IDK...like you said: "to each their own..."
Chuck those babies in a lathe and blend the edges! It would certainly look like it was meant to be?
