Default Re: Hot or oil burning smell while driving

How timely! Took my roadster in for an oilchange last week and was told at pick-up that I should have my gaskets replaced due to leakage.
I did notice a slight burt oil smell during the summer but it seemed to go away. In Sept. I made a road trip to middle Tennessee about 1200 mile round trip. Checked oil before leaving home and again before leaving for home and neither time was the oil low on the dip stick.
When I was washing the car after the trip I did notice quite a bit of oily residue in the front wheel well, rocker panel inside the door frames and rear wheel well. I had driven through some rain on the way home and figured I had run through some spillage on the highway. Again checked my oil level and again it seemed okay.
I have absolutely no reason not to trust my machanic. His dad was my machanic since 1965 and I credit him with my getting 250k miles out of my first VW, a second Vw and a BMW. Although my original mechanic has passed away his son has always seemed to be honest a fair.
Does $750.00 seem a little steep to replace the gaskets?
