Hot or oil burning smell while driving
There have been a few oil leaks at both the valve cover gasket and a little cover mounted to the valve cover. In either case, it should be relatively inexpensive.
I have seen that most of you have posted that you had "the smell" of oil or gas leaking during normal driving. However when pushing the car (i.e. revving to 5500rpm and shifting) I do get the burnt oil smell momentarily afterward. I assume this is normal correct? I checked my oil pan guard by removing it and found no leaks. Please let me know as I have always wondered if this is normal.
My 08 had the valve cover gaskets redone when it was still under the 3/36 & my 07 had the covers completely replaced under the lifetime powertrain warranty.
How timely! Took my roadster in for an oilchange last week and was told at pick-up that I should have my gaskets replaced due to leakage.
I did notice a slight burt oil smell during the summer but it seemed to go away. In Sept. I made a road trip to middle Tennessee about 1200 mile round trip. Checked oil before leaving home and again before leaving for home and neither time was the oil low on the dip stick.
When I was washing the car after the trip I did notice quite a bit of oily residue in the front wheel well, rocker panel inside the door frames and rear wheel well. I had driven through some rain on the way home and figured I had run through some spillage on the highway. Again checked my oil level and again it seemed okay.
I have absolutely no reason not to trust my machanic. His dad was my machanic since 1965 and I credit him with my getting 250k miles out of my first VW, a second Vw and a BMW. Although my original mechanic has passed away his son has always seemed to be honest a fair.
Does $750.00 seem a little steep to replace the gaskets?

RockAuto has a set for around $26
Labor on replacing should not exceed 1 - 2 hours max.
It is really an easy DIY ......
NOTE: The little covers on top of the valve covers do NOT have gaskets, that is RTV sealant. There is a how-to here somewhere on that too .
( you can get a set of stainless steel valve cover bolts for $32.95 from http://www.needswings.com/Valve-Cove...32vcbolts.aspx )

Both of mine were repaired by the same dealership. On the 08 the gaskets were replaced under the 3/36. On the 07 however, they said there was a TSB from Chrysler to replace the entire valve covers....they said that would have been about a $1,000 if I had had to pay for it.....Thank you Lifetime Powertrain Warranty!!
Mind you......both leaks were so minimal that if I had had to pay for the work.......I wouldn't have had them repaired. Certainly not by a dealership anyway.

Back in Sept I had mine replaced under the 8/80 extended warranty. Didn't seem to me like it was that much of a job. When the service writer told me about it, seemed to me like it was more of an afterthought.
I have maxicare extended warranty on my 07 roadster was wondering if this type of problem would be covered. Unfortunately I don't have the lifetime powertrain warranty.
