Default Hot or oil burning smell while driving

Anyone experience this... A hot or oil burning smell while driving? The car is not leaking oil or at least not where I can see ... but the garage floor is clean, I have 2,500 miles on the car and I have had this smell since mile 1.

Could just be the engine burning in although I don't remember smelling anything in mine.

Hi,

This happened with mine check or have someone check the right valve cover and the cover on top of the valve cover (the small one). It didn't leak much but it was just enough to smell.
The small cover is sealed with RTV sealer. Be careful tighten the bolts they are alloy metal.

Any more answers - mine does the same - 8,500 miles? Cat doing this? If so how to fix?

Thanks,
Ed

You probably won't see any oil under the car if there is a leak because of the big plastic undercarriage pan below the engine. Have you pulled it off and looked to see if it is dry ??

Mine did, I noticed it most while stopped and finally saw a little smoke. The leak was very small but finally showed up at the front drivers side of the valve cover and the cover was replaced under warranty.

Also, have them check the oil pressure sending unit. Mine also had the "smell". I had the dealer check it while in for a service, and they found a very small leak from the sending unit. Oil was barely visible on the aero pan under the engine. They replaced the unit and did an oil change as part of the repair. Smell gone. Only problem In 25,000 miles.

Although Chrysler would not pay for the oil filter, they did pay for the Mobil 1, under warranty...go figure.

Mmine too had that ocasional oil smell and a leak and a small leak around the oil filler housing. Looked like someone missed filling, but I knew that was not the case as the area was cleaned, but oil returned. Took it to the dealer who replaced the oil filler housing, but leak was still there. They next resealed the oil filler housing to the valve cover, and the leak and smell has gone away. Was ever so small but the smell was there. Good now.

My driver's side valve cover gasket is allowing some seeping...then it drips onto the exhaust header and creates the smell...hopefully I'll get it to the dealer for a look-see soon.

On new vehicles the paints used on engine components and exhausts smell like this for a little while, also the engine casings and cylinderhead bolts are all smeared with grease during assembly. The heat of the engine creats a smell as this stuff is dissipated, usually goes after 5K or so. You can allways drive by the dealership to get it checked if you are concerend.

Like Paul W, I notice a smell (like burnt oil) ocasionally (once or twice a month) when stopped for a light.
Went to a five star dealer, where the service manager said no problem found (billed me for diagnostics - 4k on car). I have more faith in this board, than the dealer - Since the problem is intermittent any thoughts?

I'm with everyone else on checking the valve covers. Sounds like just a small seep while the engine is running and under load.
Probably running down to the exhaust manifold and getting burned off hence nothing on the garage floor.

Just my Dos Centavos !

Just had my driver's valve cover gasket replaced due to a small leak running down onto the driver's side exhaust manifold. It wasn't enough to make it to the ground, just barely enough to wet the side of the block and get to the exhaust.

Yeah, On mine, I could actually see that the valve cover surface was shiny "wet" on the surface below the oil filler area. There was no specific area it seems to come from but it just seeped down to the exhast, never smoked though. After removing the oil filler mount and sealing that, all was fine.

For those of you with the valve cover oil leak...how many of you have fixed the problem by re-torxing the bolts on the valve cover...verses getting the gasket redone?

Also...how big of a job was it to redo the valve cover gasket/seal?
