On auto transmission cars, there is a locking mechanism ( cable ) between the ignition key assembly and the transmission shift quadrant. You must be in position 2 to be able to move the lever out of Park.
The original symptoms you described sound like a CPS getting ready to retire.
( CPS = Crankshaft Position Sensor )
REPLACE ONLY WITH BOSCH - AVOID THE CHINESE AND MEXICAN ONES.
Many thanks for the info alaxfire. I'll be keeping a close eye on things over the next couple of weeks and if it happens again will get it checked over. Hopefully these sort of faults will produce an error code for diagnosis. If it does turn out to be the CPS then it shouldn't be too expensive to remedy thankfully.
