REPLACE ONLY WITH BOSCH - AVOID THE CHINESE AND MEXICAN ONES.
As above, from my mercedes experience if you release the key they will continue to crank for around 4-5 seconds or until the engine starts whichever is sooner, hence its something you only ever notice when you have a problem as the car usually lights up within just over a second.
