This does sound similar to a fault I had years ago with completely different car a Toyota MR2 Turbo import which was fitted with traction control.

Basically the ABS and traction control was all linked together on that vehicle and when the traction control came in it was supposed to brake the spinning wheel and cut power to the engine, mine had an intermittent fault causing the car to slow to a crawl and the more you tried to accelerate the more the brakes came on and the engine power cut back along with the illumination of various warning lights.

Its a long time ago now but i think that was traced to an ABS fault
